Water Rescue Preparedness
At the Portage Fire Department, we are committed to protecting our community in all environments—including the waters of Lake Michigan. As part of our comprehensive firefighter recruitment process, we require all candidates to complete a swim test to ensure they are capable of responding to water-related emergencies safely and effectively.
Why Water Rescue Skills Matter
Located on the shores of Lake Michigan, Portage presents unique challenges that demand a high level of water rescue proficiency. Our firefighters must be ready to respond to drowning incidents, boating accidents, and hazardous conditions on the lake. Ensuring our team is comfortable and competent in aquatic environments is essential to maintaining the highest level of public safety.
Test Components
1. Open Water Swim
- Candidates will enter the pool using the steps or by lowering themselves in.
- Swim two lengths of the pool using any stroke, without stopping or making contact with the sides or bottom.
Failing Criteria:
- Stopping mid-swim or grabbing the side or lane markers.
- Touching or standing on the pool bottom.
- Inability to complete both lengths without assistance.
2. Treading Water
- Candidates will proceed to the designated deep area (minimum 7 feet deep).
- Upon the evaluator’s signal, the candidate must tread water in place and remain vertical for five (5) minutes.
- Swimming around or moving out of position is not permitted.
Failing Criteria:
- Holding onto the wall, lane markers, or other candidates.
- Drifting out of the designated area.
- Inability to remain vertical or safely tread water for the full duration.
Ensuring Readiness
This test is a vital part of ensuring that every member of our department is physically prepared and water-confident—skills essential for serving a community situated along one of the Great Lakes.
