Basic Requirements
While each department has its own hiring standards, one major similarity among most Indiana fire departments is participation in the Indiana 1977 Police and Firefighters’ Pension and Disability Fund. This is the retirement fund setup by the state for police and firefighters.
✅ Age Requirement – Applicants are generally required to be between 18 and 40 years old at the time of hire, in line with the Indiana 1977 Fund regulations. Additionally, a high school diploma or GED is necessary. Possessing a valid driver’s license is also mandatory. Many departments in the state require applicants to be at least 21 years old by date of hire. Some departments allow lateral transfers beyond this age limit.

✅ Valid Driver’s License – Firefighters must have a clean driving record and a valid driver’s license.
✅ Physical Fitness – Most departments require some sort of physical fitness test. The most common one used is that of the CPAT. Along with a physical fitness assessment, many departments require a ladder climb to test to see if the candidate is afraid of heights.
✅ Medical and Psychological Evaluations – A physical exam, drug screening, and mental health evaluation are standard before employment.
✅ No Felony Convictions – Background checks are required, and any serious criminal history may disqualify a candidate.
✅ Residency Requirements – Some municipalities require firefighters to live within a certain distance of their department or city limits.
Steps to Fast Track your Indiana Firefighting Career
Step 1: Meet the Basic Requirements
Before applying, you’ll need to meet certain certifications that many departments expect:
- EMT-Basic or Paramedic Certification
Most fire departments prefer or require EMT certification. Some offer training after hire, but having it beforehand gives you a big advantage. Portage Fire requires EMT-Basic certification before you can be hired. - Firefighter I/II Certification
This is the standard entry-level training for firefighters in Indiana. It can be earned through local fire academies or vocational programs. At Portage Fire, new hires attend a fire academy unless they’ve already completed a certified training program.

Step 2: Pass the CPAT (Candidate Physical Ability Test)
The CPAT is a timed physical test that simulates the real work of firefighting—climbing stairs, dragging hoses, and more. Most fire departments, including Portage, require it before moving forward in the hiring process.
- The CPAT has 8 events and is pass/fail based on time.
- Completing your EMT and CPAT makes you eligible for more departments, especially if you’re nationally registered.

- Written Test – Covers basic math, reading, and problem-solving. Portage uses Public Safety Answers, which includes a webcam interview.
- Oral Interview – A panel of fire officials or civilians evaluates your communication and professionalism.
- Background Check – Reviews your work history and criminal record.
- Psychological Evaluation – Required across Indiana. Portage does not use polygraph testing.
- Medical Exam – Confirms you meet firefighter health standards.
