Tactical Emergency Medical Support (TEMS) Team
The Tactical Emergency Medical Support (TEMS) Team is a joint effort between the Portage Fire Department and the Portage Police Department. This specialized unit includes 6 Portage Fire Department paramedics assigned to the SWAT team, alongside 12 police officers—forming an 18-member team trained to operate in high-risk environments.
Tactical paramedics play a vital role during SWAT operations by delivering advanced life support in rapidly evolving, often hazardous situations. These medics are trained to integrate seamlessly with law enforcement, providing medical care under pressure and within dangerous settings.
Bridging Medicine and Law Enforcement in High-Risk Operations
Tactical medics possess the unique ability to assess threats, navigate volatile environments, and deliver critical care on scene. Their training includes trauma management, airway control, IV therapy, and emergency drug administration—all essential in stabilizing victims or injured officers before hospital transport.
The presence of tactical medics not only enhances officer safety but also improves outcomes for civilians affected by high-threat incidents. Their rapid response and advanced skills can significantly reduce casualties, making them an indispensable part of the team’s mission success.
