Training, Continuing Education & Career Advancement

The Portage Fire Department is proud to have certified instructors in every major discipline of firefighting and emergency medical services. Our department is committed to ongoing education—not only for our own personnel, but for the broader fire service community. We provide comprehensive, on-duty training to ensure our crews maintain required certifications and stay up to date with the latest techniques and protocols.

Our members also actively pursue external training opportunities throughout the year, attending both local and national courses to further enhance their skills. In addition, Portage Fire plays a leading role in the regional career fire academy, which includes collaboration with ten neighboring departments.

Instructors who dedicate their time to teaching receive overtime compensation and accrue points toward a $500 annual instructor stipend—recognizing both their expertise and their commitment to advancing the fire service profession.

What sets the Portage Fire Department apart is our strong commitment to career development through a structured advancement program. From the start, we invest in our new hires by enrolling them in a comprehensive career fire academy. Once a firefighter demonstrates competency in both firefighting and EMT responsibilities, the department sponsors their enrollment in a local paramedic program.

We cover the full cost of the paramedic course, provide shift coverage during class time, and pay for clinical rotations, removing the financial and logistical barriers to advancement. After completing the paramedic program and serving three years with the department, members are promoted to the rank of Master Firefighter.

After achieving the rank of Master Firefighter, employees are eligible to apply for the Acting Engineer Program. This program is designed to train firefighters in the safe operation and driving of all department apparatus, both en route and on scene at emergencies.

The program begins with an intensive, week-long training course, followed by a structured mentorship under an experienced Engineer. Throughout the program, firefighters must demonstrate proficiency in both safe driving and apparatus operation under real-world conditions.

Upon successful completion, participants become eligible to serve as Acting Engineers and are qualified to test for Engineer promotion when a position becomes available.

After obtaining Indiana Fire Officer I certification and serving as an Acting Engineer, a firefighter may request to enter the Acting Officer Program. Similar in structure to the Acting Engineer Program, this next step in career advancement begins with a focused, week-long classroom training.

Following the classroom portion, the firefighter enters a mentorship phase, during which they perform the duties of a company officer under supervision. This hands-on experience is designed to build leadership skills, decision-making abilities, and operational confidence.

Upon successful completion of the program, the firefighter becomes eligible to serve as an Acting Officer and is qualified to test for promotion to the rank of Lieutenant.
