Candidate Physical Agility Test

The Portage Fire Department recognizes the CPAT as the standard physical agility test for firefighter hiring. All applicants are required to submit a valid CPAT certificate dated within the past 12 months at the time of application.

The Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT) is a nationally recognized physical assessment used by fire departments across the U.S. and Canada to evaluate a candidate’s ability to perform essential firefighting tasks. It ensures applicants have the strength, endurance, and agility required to perform safely and effectively in the field.

The CPAT consists of eight job-specific events, completed in a set order within a timed course. These events simulate real-world firefighting duties, including stair climbing, hose dragging, equipment carrying, forcible entry, and victim rescue.

Here is a general overview of the eight events, in the order they’re typically performed:

  • Stair Climb: This simulates climbing stairs in full protective clothing while carrying high-rise packs.
  • Hose Drag: This involves stretching uncharged hoselines, advancing lines, and pulling lines.
  • Equipment Carry: This simulates removing and carrying equipment from fire apparatus to the fireground.
  • Ladder Raise and Extension: This simulates placing a ground ladder at a fire structure and extending the ladder to a window or roof.
  • Forcible Entry: This simulates penetrating a locked door or breaching a wall.
  • Search: This involves crawling through a dark, unpredictable area to search for victims.
  • Rescue Drag: This simulates removing a victim or partner from a fire scene.
  • Ceiling Breach and Pull: This simulates breaking and pulling down a ceiling to check for fire extension.

Signing up for the CPAT is simple. The test is held nationally at many different locations. Click on the link below to Sign up for the CPAT
