What to Expect When you Start at the Portage Fire Department.

After 11 weeks of intensive training, recruits of the District 1 Career Academy successfully complete a comprehensive firefighter training program. Throughout the academy, participants develop core skills essential to firefighting and rescue operations. Instruction includes the use of personal protective equipment (PPE), hazardous materials recognition, proper ladder handling, and operation of self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA). Trainees also study building construction, fire behavior, and emergency response strategies. Upon graduation, each recruit is well-prepared to begin their career as a professional firefighter.

New firefighters begin their journey with a week-long orientation known as “A Week of Days.” This critical phase introduces them to departmental policies, procedures, and standard operating guidelines. Recruits also study the city’s layout, key response zones, and local hospital locations to ensure efficient and accurate navigation during emergencies. The goal is to build a strong foundation for situational readiness and operational effectiveness.

To help new firefighters adapt to station life, Portage Fire Department utilizes a structured station rotation program. This system allows probationary employees to experience daily operations across multiple stations, interact with different crews, and gain hands-on experience with various apparatus. Rotating through the department helps each new hire understand station-specific routines and develop a well-rounded perspective on serving the community effectively.

Mentorship is a cornerstone of training at the Portage Fire Department. Each probationary firefighter is assigned a dedicated mentor to guide them through their transition into the fire service. While all crews contribute to training, mentors offer consistent support, coaching, and feedback throughout the orientation period and beyond. Through mentorship, new firefighters gain confidence in emergency response, fireground operations, dispatch communications, and patient care. This program ensures a strong support system and helps every new firefighter thrive in their role.

At Portage Fire Department, all firefighters are required to become certified paramedics to ensure comprehensive emergency care for the community. Enrollment in paramedic training is based on class availability, employee readiness, and performance. The curriculum covers advanced medical topics such as cardiac monitoring (EKG), medication administration, IV therapy, and airway management. This cross-training equips firefighters with the lifesaving skills needed for medical emergencies, disaster response, and search and rescue operations—further reinforcing our commitment to all-hazards response.
